LEED Construction Rating
The US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building Rating System provides a systematic, predictable means to earn LEED certification. The Green Building Rating System considers a number of factors for building projects in order to allocate credits. Factors considered include design and build aspects of the site itself, energy and water efficiency, the use of recycled content building materials, minimizing environmental effects caused by buildings (to both the local and global environment), and the quality of the indoor environment. Each factor counts for a predetermined number of credits.
Different LEED rating systems are used for different types of projects. For example, the rating system for new construction and major renovations (NC) is different than the rating system for existing buildings (EB). A LEED rating has a number of benefits such as recognition from a recognized organization (USBGC) for a commitment to preserving our environment, and the potential to qualify for local government initiatives. Possible LEED ratings include Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
